I just refused someone the other day because I can't stand her any more now than I could stand her years ago. Others that can only very loosely be considered acquaintances I have allowed--for now--just because I'm surprised they would bother to track me down. There was no friendship with them "back in the day" really, but I don't mind being open to the possibility now. It might be rude to refuse, but I have no problem with it at all.
